Vidya Vox, the youtube star who’s won our heart with her soulful mashups

Imagine this: You’re driving back home after a busy Thursday at work. The evenings are just pleasant enough to roll down your windows, but oops – you just missed the signal &$%#! As you’re impatiently counting down seconds till the light goes from red to green, a car pulls up next to you and you hear: “So, baby, pull me closer in the back seat of your Rover, that I know you can’t afford; bite that tattoo on your shoulder.” Now, we can bet 84% of our lovely readers have started humming “Kaisi teri khudgarzi, na dhoop chune na chhaao”, are tapping the steering wheel and have a big smile on their face.

Ladies & gentlemen, we have Vidya Vox aka Vidya Iyer to thank for this wonderful change in mood. This YouTube sensation has found a place in many hearts, including the ones at HQ with her soulful mashups. Vidya brings the best of her two worlds together via the medium of music. The Indian-born American girl has stayed close to her roots and uses her training in classical music to give a new dimension to Western pop songs. In a bold move, she ditched her degree in psychology and moved across continents to revive and strengthen her musical training.  Since joining hands with Shanker Tucker, composer and friend, to release her first performance, Vidya has garnered over 2 million subscribers for her own YouTube channel. Her collaborations and expeditions haven’t stopped – she’s worked with various artists and travelled across the globe to get the perfect feel for her mashups and videos. #DSSCRecommends five mashups by Vidya Vox that you need to add to your playlist right now.

Am I wrong | Yeh Duriyaan (ft. Rohan Kymal)

This soul-touching mashup works like a wonder drug – it calms us down & perks us up at the same time. It’s one of our top choices for Wednesday afternoons to get over the mid-week stress and get us through the week.

One Dance | Gur Naal Ishq Mitha

Most of us who’ve grown up in Delhi would have some memory of ‘Gur naal ishq mitha’- an aunt’s wedding, school conti, or the birthday party of your bestie’s older sister. All those memories have now been pushed aside to make space for new ones as Vidya’s worked her magic on this Indie Pop number from the 90s.

Sandcastles | Teri kher mangdi (ft Devender Pal)

We bow down to this genius who brings together tunes & beats so gracefully, it leaves you wondering what the original was. Vidya’s talent shines through this heartfelt piece.

All of me | Main hoon hero tera

Most of us at HQ didn’t have Salman Khan’s ‘Main hoon hero tera’ on our radar till we heard VV’s mashup. It’s a wonderful amalgamation of her Hindustani classical training and pop culture.

Closer | Kabira (ft Casey Breves)

Of course this made the cut. Vidya’s cover is the only version that’s imprinted in our minds now!

VV, you’ve got us hooked!
