Homemade Pizza

Caters to: 8 gobblers

Prep time: 1 hour 10 minutes

Cook time: 20 minutes

Challenge level: Intermediate

From The Pantry:

Dough:

  • 10 grams dry yeast
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons shortening

Sauce:

  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon black pepper powder
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 170 grams tomato paste
  • ½ up chopped onion
  • 170 ml water
  • ¼ teaspoon dried basil
  • ⅛ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon chilli powder
  • ¼ teaspoon dried marjoram
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin powder

Cook Away:

  1. Take a small bowl, add yeast and warm water to it, let it sit for about 10 minutes, or until creamy.
  2. Mix flour, salt, and shortening in a large bowl. Add the yeast to this, stirring as you go.
  3. Once the dough pulls together, take it out & place on a slightly floured surface, and knead to make it smooth and elastic (about 8 minutes).
  4. Put the dough in a lightly oiled large bowl & turn it around to coat in the oil. Cover this bowl with a damp cloth and let it sit in a warm place for 45 minutes or until the dough has doubled in volume.
  5. Saute onion on a small saucepan until tender.
  6. Stir in the tomato paste and water.
  7. Add all the remaining sauce ingredients to this mix and let it simmer for about 20 minutes.
  8. Divide the dough in half and spread each on separate pizza pans. Spread the sauce on these & add as many toppings as you like.
  9. Set the oven to 200C and cook for 20 minutes or until the crust becomes golden brown.

You have two 12-inch pizzas to get the party started- No need to serve, people will grab slices before you have the chance to offer!
